Urology is the branch of medicine that involves the study of medical and surgical diseases of both the female and male urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. Physicians who deal with disorders related to the kidneys, bladder, ureters, urethra and adrenal glands are called urologists or urologic surgeons.
Urologists treat a range of urological conditions, such as malfunctions and infections in the urinary tract, male infertility, urologic oncologic, renal transplantation, enlarged prostate, cancer in the male/female urinary tract or in the male reproductive system, inflammation of the prostate, ureteral and kidney stones, painful bladder syndrome, erectile dysfunction, and so on.
Major urology tests and diagnosis procedures, such as MRI scans, CT scans, ultrasounds, urine test, biopsies, cytoscopic tests are required to evaluate the conditions of the urinary tract in male/female and the male reproductive system.
Primary treatment includes the use of medicines, but for more severe cases surgical procedures, transplants, circumcisions, laser therapies, chemotherapies, vasectomies, cystography, etc., are the solution. Minimally invasive surgeries or open surgeries are part of the treatment plan to remove tumours or treat other conditions in the urinary tract. Nowadays, a laser therapy treatment is used for kidney stones, cancers and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Vasectomy is a permanent male contraception that is usually performed by urological surgeons. Another significant procedure, called kidney transplant helps patients to have a new kidney from a donor if his/her has failed. Cystography is yet an examination process done to diagnose problems in the bladder. Non-invasive treatment options like laparoscopic and endoscopic techniques are specifically used for children. Robotic surgery is one of the advanced procedures used for treating urological conditions in children.
Patients are generally referred to a urologist by their general physicians for better evaluation and exact treatment. Any signs and symptoms of urology problems with potential risk should be not be neglected and treated right away.
