Overview

Root Canal Treatment, also called Endodontic treatment, is used to treat infected or inflamed pulp inside the tooth. The dental terminology, ‘’root canal’’, is derived from the fact that it involves cleaning of badly damaged tissues inside the canal of your teeth.

The reasons for root canal are a cracked teeth, repeated dental treatment, deep cavities and trauma to the teeth. When the root of a tooth gets severely damaged, the pulp dies. The pain may get dormant initially, but returns as a painful infection that spreads into the periapical tissues into the bone. This leads to chronic infection with mild to severe symptoms.

A root canal specialist or an Endodontist is trained for treating infected or diseased root canals. The main focus of the treatment is to save your teeth. The dentist does a thorough examination of your tooth and examines your dental history. Some of the common advantages of a Root Canal treatment are efficient chewing, natural appearance, normal biting sensation and force and protection of the teeth from excessive strain and wear.

During a root canal, the dentist removes infected or inflamed pulp from the inside canal of the root. After cleaning and disinfecting the area, a rubber-like material is filled in the cavity and sealed. The tooth is later restored with a filling or a crown for protection. Thus, after the treatment the tooth continues to function like any normal tooth. Before you go through the procedure, you need a few preparations that have been discussed below.

Before the Treatment

  • Before treatment of a root canal, talk to your doctor regarding the medicines you are taking, any health concern that you may have and your dental history.
  • Make sure that you have all your insurance information in place so that after the treatment you get the insurance money.
  • You will have to undergo dental X-rays and a thorough examination by your dentist. Do not forget to bring your X-ray report on the day of surgery.
  • Before the procedure, patients are usually recommended to have non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. However, avoid taking the medicines if you are allergic to them.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages 12-48 hours before the treatment. Also, do not smoke 12 hours before the therapy.
  • Have normal diet, including foods and non-alcoholic liquids before the surgery.
  • On the night before the treatment, try and sleep with your head positioned higher.

How it is Performed

How root canal treatment is performed has been explained in the following steps:

  • Local anaesthesia is injected into the gum area where the tooth is infected in order to numb the surrounding tissues. The treatment doesn’t start until the area becomes fully numb.
  • A dental dam (a thin sheet of rubber) is used to cover the affected and the surrounding teeth. The tooth that is treated juts out through a hole in the dam, so that your dentist can treat it by isolating it from saliva in your mouth. The procedure ensures treatment of the affected tooth in a sterile environment.
  • A hole is drilled from the behind the front of the affected tooth or through the biting surface, enabling access to the root canals and pulp chambers for treatment.
  • The root canals or chambers are disinfected with antibacterial and antiseptic solution before and after the procedure of removing diseased tissues from the canal.
  • Specially designed instruments are used through the hole to clean out diseased pulp or worn tissues from the root chamber. Once decayed tissues and pulp are removed from the canal, there is no pain felt in the specific tooth.
  • Once cleaned, the canals are properly shaped to receive sealers and root canal fillings. Before sealing the canal finally, the canal is washed once again to remove any root canal debris.
  • After permanent filling is put into the canal, the dam is removed. If the tooth fails to hold the filling in place, your endodontist fixes a post in one of the canals to retain the tooth filling.

Recovery

After the root canal surgery, you are given antibiotics to prevent infections. The recovery of root canal procedure takes a few days to a week. Slight soreness and tenderness to biting are common after the treatment, which are treated with prescribed drugs and over-the-counter medications.

In the first few days of the surgery, it is normal for your tooth to feel sensitive. Most of the discomfort is removed with painkillers. The tooth will, however, feel a little different from other teeth for sometime, but you will get used to it. In case, you feel pressure or pain in the tooth, inform it to the doctor immediately.
